Tour Details

Huayan Temple sits in southwest Datong Ancient City. Built in 1038 under the Liao Dynasty, it takes its name from the Avatamsaka Sutra. A former imperial temple of the Liao Kingdom, this well-preserved Liao-Jin Buddhist complex is a national key cultural relic and 4A scenic site.
Divided into Upper and Lower Temple sections with over 30 ancient structures, it showcases authentic Liao and Jin dynasty art:
  • Upper Temple Mahavira Hall

One of China’s largest surviving Liao-Jin Buddha halls, adorned with grand antique murals and the country’s biggest glazed roof dragon ornaments.

  • Lower Temple Bojia Hall (Star Highlight)

A complete original Liao wooden hall home to 31 rare painted statues. Its iconic grinning Bodhisattva is known as the “Eastern Venus”. Architect Liang Sicheng lauded its intricately carved scripture cabinets with miniature palace pavilions as an unparalleled national treasure.

  • Huayan Pagoda

China’s second-tallest full wooden mortise-and-tenon pagoda, with a 100-ton solid copper Buddha chamber underground.
