Get picked up at your Datong hotel or train station and ride an air-conditioned car to Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 1,500-year-old Northern Wei royal cave complex stretches 1km across cliffs, with 252 caves and over 51,000 Buddha statues.

Don’t miss the landmark 13.75m-tall Open-Air Giant Buddha (Cave 20), blending ancient Indian and Central Asian Gandhara art. Explore the core Tan Yao Caves, where emperor-shaped Buddhas showcase how Buddhist art evolved into distinct Chinese styles.


We then visit the 1,500-year-old Hanging Temple on Heng Mountain. Its 40+ pavilions hang 50m high, anchored by concealed rock beams without iron nails, a stunning cliffside “castle in the air”.
